Dear Parents and Guardians,
Thank you for stopping by and taking a moment to see what we have been doing in art this year. With the change in graduation requirements there are a lot of new faces in art with limited art exposure and in some cases interest, but that doesn't mean art class can't be an exciting environment to learn many new skills that will be of use outside of the art classroom.
My goal is to work with each students strengths and to address the areas they can work on. Since many of my students will be limited with their exposure to art I want to instill a fearlessness in how they approach new thoughts and ideas and become critical thinkers who are able to clearly express their thoughts and ideas.
I will introduce a wide range of vocabulary, media, as well as the larger concepts of The Elements of Art and Principles of Design. These will be used together for the assignments to explore specific Elements and/or Principles.
At the end of each assignment students will fill out a grading sheet that contains a rubric and asks them to think about various parts of the assignment. It compliments the visual with the written word and gives students a chance to practice their analytically thinking and writing for a meaning. It does get graded as part of their overall assignment.
Grading assignments in art isn't like core subjects where there is a definitive right or wrong answer, but there are better solutions than others with each assignment. Since each assignment has a specific goals, and using specific Elements and/or Principles, it helps simplify the grading. Also, I grade each student against themselves. Which means that every student has the chance to do well, and excel in my class.
If they are paying attention and working in class, and they are following the assignments and coming up with creative solutions and trying their best, they will do extremely well in my class, learn a lot and enjoy themselves doing so.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns I am very easy to reach via email and answer those promptly.
Just email me here.
Thank you,
Mr P
