Master Copies are a time honored way for budding as well as established artists to learn from the Masters. By trying to recreate the work of an experienced hand students learn new ways to view their work, ways to mix paint, and get an insight into how the artist mind works.
For our assignment the students were given Wayne Thiebaud, David Hockney, Edvard Munch, Marc Chagall ,Raphael, and Edward Hopper as the artists to look at first as inspiration. I did allow students to choose other artists, and in some cases the definition of "Master" may have been stretched a bit, but it was important that the students found a piece that spoke to them.
