Local-ish Happenings....
Local for the sake of Leonard, TX I am going to use the entire metroplex as my definition of local.
Young Masters 2014 at the DMA
Each year the DMA has a show of AP Art, Art History, and Music Theory students who are judged for this particular show. They get their work hung in the concourse of the DMA and there are awards presented beyond just the honor of being in the DMA. I highly recommend going and seeing this show as it never fails to impress that they are high school students.
For more information visit the DMA page for Young Masters here.
MUSEUM links--
Dallas Museum of Art--The DMA has a wide ranging collection of 22,000 works of art extending from ancient to modern times. In January 2013 the DMA made the bold move of opening up the museum free of charge for the general galleries. Special exhibits still cost to visit, but you have more than enough to enjoy for the cost of $0! Its also located across the street from both the Nasher and the Crowe.
Nasher Sculpture Center--Created from the private holdings of Raymond and Patsy Nasher. With over 300 modern sculptures in their holdings, its complimented by modern paintings and drawings. They also have many events in their impressive outdoor garden with live music, movies and food. As a bonus its across the street from the DMA and the Crow Collection.
Crow Collection of Asian Art--I liken the The Crow Collection to a jewel box, its not very large, but its holding are of wonderful quality. Their collection ranges from 3500 BC to the early 20th century. They have a wide range of activities, and like the DMA, its free! Also, its across the street from the DMA and the Nasher.
Kimbell Art Museum--The Kimbell's permanent collection is free, but you will have to pay to see their special exhibits. The collections focus is wide ranging, and doesn't seek to have a specific historical era covered, but to have pieces of "definitive excellence." They have a unique piece of Michelangelo's which is considered to be his first known painting.
Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth--The Moderns 3000 objects consist of post WWII. Pop and Minimalism is strongly represented. The objects are housed in a wonderful building that Travel+Leisure named one of the worlds most beautiful museums.
Amon Carter Museum of American Art--The Amon Carter houses over 6400 objects from American Art. The masterworks are a who's who of American Art
