Chemming Boey is a Malaysian artist who one day in Southern California drew on a polystyrene cup because he had no paper. Intrigued by the results he took this idea and ran with it. Creating engaging works on cups that are shown in the US and Asia.

Taking the lowly cup is an interesting idea for an established artist, but for a class full of those who question their artistic abilities one of the most intimidating sights can a blank piece of paper!
A cup is much more friendly then a blank piece of paper. It was also unique in the fact that it has sculptural elements because you have a drawing in the round, as opposed to something flat.
We looked at a variety of his cups and noted how he uses line, cross hatching, stippling and tone to add interest to his work. Also, how he had a wide range of looks and feels for his cups. One of the interesting discoveries was it seemed that the same hand couldn't create all the different looks.
We talked about the use of negative shapes, and how its important to fill up the spaces, but what spaces are left, to have them interesting.
The solutions we had were varied and inventive.
